The welcome email series: what to send in the first week
New subscribers are paying the most attention they ever will. Here is a simple five email welcome series you can set up once and use forever.

When someone joins your email list, they are curious and paying attention. Welcome emails are often among the most opened emails a business ever sends. If you only set up one automation, make it this one.
A welcome series is a short set of emails that send automatically after someone signs up. You write it once, and it greets every new subscriber for years.
Why one welcome email is not enough
A single welcome email is good. A short series is better, because it gives you time to introduce yourself, earn trust and guide people to their first purchase without cramming everything into one long message.
A simple five email plan
Email 1: Welcome and deliver (send right away)
Thank them for joining. If you promised a gift, like a checklist or a discount code, give it here right at the top. Then tell them what to expect: how often you will email and what kind of content.
Keep it short. Ask one easy question, such as "What made you sign up?" and invite them to reply. Replies are great for your inbox reputation and teach you a lot about your audience.
Email 2: Your story (day 2)
Share why your business exists. Not a long history, just the real reason you started and who you help. People buy from people they feel they know.
Email 3: Your best content (day 4)
Send them your most useful article, video or guide. Pick the one that solves a common problem for your customers. This shows the value of staying on your list.
Email 4: Proof (day 6)
Share a short customer story or a few reviews. Real words from real customers build trust faster than anything you can say about yourself.
Email 5: A clear offer (day 8)
Now you have earned the right to ask. Make a simple offer: a product, a free call or a time limited discount. Explain who it is for and what they get. One button, one goal.
Tips that make it work
- Write like a person. Send from a real name and write as if to one customer.
- Keep each email focused. One idea and one main link per email.
- Stop selling to buyers. If someone buys after email 2, take them out of the offer emails. Most tools can do this automatically.
- Check it every few months. Update links, offers and stories so the series stays fresh.
Setting it up in your tool
Most email marketing tools have an automation builder. The trigger is "joins list" or "subscribes to form". Then you add each email with a wait step between them. On Mailchimp, automations need a paid plan. Brevo's free plan includes basic automations. Check the current limits on your tool before you build.
Measure what matters
Look at clicks on each email and how many new subscribers buy within the first month. If people drop off after email 2, make email 3 more useful or move your best content earlier.
A good welcome series works quietly in the background, turning new subscribers into customers while you focus on running your business.
